Denver Pioneers star Tommy Burner honored with USBWA award

University of Denver guard Tommy Bruner was one of five players named to the USBWA national team of the week.

Bruner scored 49 points in the Pioneers’ 111-110 double-overtime win over South Dakota Thursday. The output was the most by a Division I player this season, a career-high for Bruner and the most points by a Pioneer in DU’s modern Division I era (1998-99 season).

In addition to his scoring, Bruner matched a season-high with eight assists, including four in the overtime sessions.

Bruner scored 21 points in 28 minutes Saturday in a loss to Omaha, his third-straight game of 20-plus points and the 16th time this season Bruner has scored over 20 points.

On Monday, Bruner was named co-player of the week in the Summit League.

Denver (13-9 overall, 4-3 Summit) opens a three-game road trip Thursday at Kansas City.
