“We closed out last year with a bang,” said Sheriff Jason Mikesell, before being sworn into office for his first official term.

“The coroner’s department is a very sensitive activity, one that requires a great deal of dignity and respect for a lot of people,” said Al Born, speaking before the swearing-in ceremony Jan. 8 when he would transfer the position to Kayla Daugherty, who was elected in November.

A time for farewells and initiations, the ceremony last week in Centennial Hall in Cripple Creek signaled a changing of the guard, one that pledged to uphold the county’s fiscal-conservative policies.
