A suspect is dead after Pueblo police say he brandished a knife when officers confronted him and began to stab himself after the authorities shot him.

Officers were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday to the 1100 block of Bonforte Boulevard for a report of a robbery, according to a news release.

Police spotted the suspect in a vehicle near Eighth Street and Glendale Avenue, and a car chase ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed in the 700 block of West Eighth Street, the release stated.

Police shot the suspect after they say he pulled out a knife and refused to drop his weapon. Officers Tasered the suspect when he began to stab himself “to prevent the suspect from causing further harm to himself,” according to the release.

Medics rushed the suspect to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The coroner will perform an autopsy to determine the suspect’s cause and manner of death, and the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
