Crime recap: Colorado Springs police made 349 arrests last week

Colorado Springs police saw gun violence, traffic accidents and arson around the city, making a total of 349 arrests last week, according to department records.
From Sept. 7 to Sept. 13, the Colorado Springs Police Department posted 14 blotter entries to its public database of arrests approved for public release. Here is a recap of those entries.
CSPD’s blotter page mentions that the blotter posts are only a small fraction of daily calls to service.
Sunday, Sept. 7
At 2:06 a.m., one man was arrested after allegedly threatening two people and kidnapping one woman using a gun near South Academy Boulevard and Pikes Peak Avenue. The woman was uninjured and Jimmy Melgoza, 33, faces felony charges of menacing and kidnapping.
At 2:15 a.m., police responded to the 3700 block of Astrozon Boulevard, where Karriem Johnson and Lugene Burnett were arrested after allegedly assaulting a man and stealing his firearm in the parking lot following an altercation inside a club.
Monday, Sept. 8
Just after 10 p.m., two juveniles were arrested on charges of second-degree burglary in the 200 block of East St. Elmo Avenue before being released to their parents. One of the teens was on probation for felony menacing and second-degree assault.
Wednesday, Sept. 10
At 2:48 p.m., police responded to a reported shooting and found that two juveniles were handling a gun when it discharged and hit one of them. The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the other juvenile was arrested and faces assault charges.
Thursday, Sept. 11
Police were conducting a traffic stop when a vehicle struck the rear quarter panel of their patrol vehicle. Jamison Burnley, the driver of the vehicle, allegedly struck the patrol car, rolled into the air and landed 30 yards south. An officer was struck by debris and was treated for minor injuries.
Also on Thursday, Michelle Torres, 21, was arrested in connection with the house that burnt down after a firework was shot in its direction shortly after midnight on July 5. She is one of two suspects in the crime, and Xavier Resendez, 23, is still wanted by police.
Friday, Sept. 12
Just before 3 a.m., Eric Therrien, 32, was arrested after allegedly setting fire to a church in the 4200 block of North Academy Boulevard, then setting fires at a nearby gas station and fast-food restaurant shortly after. Police say they were able to extinguish the fires quickly.
At 9:40 a.m. Friday, Brandon Bartnick, 32, was arrested after allegedly “exposing himself” to a woman and then threatening her with a knife in the 7700 block of North Academy Boulevard. During his arrest, police say he kicked and spit on an officer.
Additional incidents at a glance
- On Sunday, Spence Massey, 53, was arrested after he allegedly pulled a woman into a room and fired a gun into the ceiling in the 1000 block of Stewart Place. The woman was uninjured.
- On Tuesday, police posted about a potential gas leak at their impound lot, leading to a temporary closure.
- On Wednesday, the department responded to a motor vehicle theft in the 200 block of 12th Street, leading to the arrest of two individuals.
- On Wednesday, police responded to a fatal auto-pedestrian crash at the MLK Jr. Bypass (U.S. 24) on-ramp onto Interstate 25. The cause of the accident and victim’s identity are yet to be released.
- On Thursday, police arrested Justin Thomas, 37, who allegedly set fire to “several items” at the Safeway at 1121 N. Circle Drive in July as a diversion to “steal laundry detergent,” causing $19,000 in damage.
- On Friday, Zebediah Morris, 28, was arrested on a felony warrant related to “multiple” drug charges when police allegedly found 50 grams of narcotics and evidence of drug distribution in his vehicle.
