Wildfires update: 2 new blazes force evacuations in southwest Colorado

As emergency crews continue to gain containment on a series of wildfires in western Colorado, two new blazes have forced evacuations in La Plata County in the southwest region of the state, according to fire officials.
The Elkhorn fire, which is burning on county and U.S. Forest Service land about 13 miles northwest of Durango, started out as a structure fire at about 5 p.m. Saturday and moved into the wildland, It was mapped at 145 acres with 0% containment, according to Operations Chief Nick Collard.
Evacuations were ordered in the area bordered by Stevens Creek to the south and by County Road 253, to the west, County Road 250 and the Animas River, officials said. Two additional zones, along Elkhorn Mountain Road and County Road 253, were under pre-evacuation orders as of Sunday.
Colorado Springs, Forest Service announce partnership to combat wildfire risks
The Rim Road fire, located along County Road 318, is currently at about 112 acres with no containment reported, according to a news release from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The blaze was first reported at about 3 p.m. Saturday.
Fire crews were working on containment lines on Sunday in an effort to keep the flames from reaching a nearby oil field, officials said. Some oil and gas operations were shut down as a precaution. Several air tankers were dropping fire retardant on the flames to reduce the heat.
The blazes have forced the evacuation of more than 50 homes, officials said.
Here’s an update on other wildfires in the western part of the state:
Turner Gulch fire
The largest of several fires ignited by lightning strikes earlier this month, the Turner Gulch blaze has scorched 19,139 acres and is at 54% containment, according to InciWeb, an incident information website.
South Rim fire
The South Rim blaze was at 4,232 acres and 41% containment as of Sunday morning, according to incident officials. Most of the remaining heat is inside the fire perimeter as the blaze begins to run out of fuel to burn.
However, a new fire sparked in Montrose County near the South Rim fire on Sunday, according to the Gunnison Regional 911 Center. The new blaze, called the Kinikin fire, has forced a closure on Highway 50 at mile marker 102. Some crews and equipment from the South Rim fire have been sent to fight the new blaze, officials said.
Sowbelly fire
The Sowbelly fire, which spans Mesa and Delta counties, is at 95% containment, according to InciWeb. The blaze has burned 2,274 acres so far.
Wright Draw fire
The Wright Draw fire has reached 466 acres and is at 92% containment, according to incident officials.
Deer Creek fire
The Deer Creek fire, which started in Utah and crossed into western Colorado, is at 17,724 acres and 77% containment, according to InciWeb.
