UCCS student dies at campus gym after medical emergency

A nursing student is dead after a medical emergency in a college gym Feb. 12, said University of Colorado Colorado Springs spokesperson Chris Valentine.

Officials said that at roughly 5 p.m., a person exercising in the campus recreation room collapsed.

Valentine said numerous gym patrons quickly tried to assist the collapsed person, rendering CPR and other life-saving measures as medical personnel made their way to the area.

According to officials, the student, later identified as UCCS senior Mia Brown, was pronounced dead at the scene.

In an email to the university, Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet confirmed Brown’s identity and said she died after a medical emergency.

“She was a dedicated nursing student who was highly involved on campus, and she will be very missed,” Sobanet said in the statement.

The chancellor’s message included a thank-you to the students and staff who stepped in to help during the emergency.

Colorado Springs Police Department spokesperson Caitlin Ford said officers with the department responded to the scene Monday evening to assist; however, UCCS campus police were handling the case.

According to Valentine, no foul play is suspected.

“We are doing our best to commend those who ran to help (Monday),” Valentine said.

For faculty and staff of UCCS needing support during this time, you can contact the Real Help Hotline at (833) 533-CHAT (2428) or visit the resources website for more information.
