[CSG PRINT] Pine Creek boys, Discovery Canyon girls win regions

The Discovery Canyon girls and Pine Creek boys wrestling teams hope to add one more title to their mantles following success at their regional tournaments Saturday.

Pine Creek cruised to the Class 5A Region 4 title with 261.5 points at Legend High School in Parker.

The Eagles finished 47 points ahead of second place Fruita Monument, which scored 214.5 points.

At Lamar Community Building in Lamar, the Thunder girls earned 185 points to place first in the region.

The Thunder trailed Loveland by six points after Friday’s session, but Discovery Canyon stormed back on the final day to secure first place by four points.

To qualify for the state tournament, which begins Thursday in Denver at Ball Arena, wrestlers must place in the top four of their brackets.

Pine Creek earned 10 spots and Everest Sutton (113), Griffin Rial (120), Ryder Rhodes (126), Gavin Weichelt (138), and Luke Graver (165) each finished first in their bracket.

The Eagles also had a pair of second-place finishers and three competitors placed third.

For Discovery Canyon, Mia Thorne earned her team’s only first-place finish at regionals, but six other Thunder will join her at state after four competitors placed second, two earned third and one finished fourth.

On the boys’ end, The Classical Academy, Mesa Ridge, Falcon and Cañon City each placed third in their respective regions.

Mesa Ridge will send seven to state and had two wrestlers, Damien Reyes (132) and Isaiah Jones (215), win their weight class in 4A’s Region 2 tournament.

The Grizzlies also had two wrestlers place second, two earn third and another finish fourth.

Falcon earned six spots at the state tournament and David Burchett (157) and Javani Majoor (165) each placed first in their classes. The Falcons also had two wrestlers earn fourth place and two finish third.

Cañon City will send six competitors to state and Elias Koonce (150), Tyler Carochi (165) and Jack Doughty (175) each walked away with first-place finishes.

The Tigers also had wrestlers place second, third and fourth to earn bids at the state tournament.

Class 3A Region 2 host TCA will send seven wrestlers to Denver as four competitors placed second, one earned third and two more finished fourth.

CHSAA will release official state brackets and wrestlers who qualified for the tournament later in the week.

The Gazette sports staff will provide updates that include additional state qualifiers.
