Switchbacks notebook: Jairo Henriquez wins USL Championship goal of the year
With a bevy of signings before the holidays, the Colorado Springs Switchbacks have moved on to 2024. But Wednesday, they got a great reason to look back at 2023.
Midfielder Jairo Henriquez won the USL Championship’s goal of the year for his phenomenal stoppage-time bicycle kick goal against Sacramento Republic FC Sept. 23 at Weidner.
With his back toward the goal, Henriquez corralled a ball that was launched into the box off the foot of forward Aaron Wheeler with his chest, kicked the ball up with his foot, and then unleashed a bicycle kick that sent the ball into the top right corner of the net.
The goal was the exclamation point on a 2-0 win for Colorado Springs over Sacramento, which finished the regular season as the top seed in the Western Conference.
Switchbacks retain Magee and Foster for 2024 season
Colorado Springs retained two Jamaican players for the 2024 season, the club announced last week.
Forward Maalique Foster and midfielder Tyreek Magee will be a part of the Switchbacks next season.
Foster signed with Colorado Springs last offseason and played 34 games for the Switchbacks, starting in 27. He scored four goals and recorded the same number of assists.
Magee signed with the club in May. He played 25 games for the club, starting 12. He recorded two assists and had a passing accuracy of 84.4%. He scored three times for Colorado Springs, notably a game-winning strike from beyond the 18-yard box against Orange County SC in September.
