Broncos’ Baron Browning doesn’t expect to be fined by NFL after a penalized hit he called ‘clean’

ENGLEWOOD – Broncos outside linebacker Baron Browning isn’t worried about possibly being fined by the NFL for his penalized hit last Sunday on Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

In Denver’s 29-12 win, Browning was flagged for roughing the passer when he hit Thompson-Robinson late in the third quarter. The quarterback left the game with a concussion and could miss Sunday’s game at the Los Angeles Rams after having yet to practice this week.

“I knew I hit him with my shoulder in his chest,’’ Browning said after Thursday’s practice at the Centura Health Training Center. “I knew it was a clean hit, so I didn’t have any worry there. … I knew I pulled up a little bit. There could have been a way bigger collision but I pulled up a little bit. I made sure I put my shoulder across his chest.”

Browning said he hadn’t heard anything about any possible NFL fine. The league announces fines on Saturday but players know before then if they have been penalized.

“I’ve never been fined before so I’m not sure how that all works and I haven’t got anything yet so I think I’m OK,’’ said Browning, in his third season. “I hope so.”

The play occurred with the Browns trailing 17-12 and facing third-and-12 at their 23 with 22 seconds left in the third quarter. Two plays after the penalty gave them a first down at their 38, the Browns fumbled the ball back to the Broncos and they scored a touchdown to take a 24-12 lead.

The flag on Browning was thrown late. It was tossed after Thompson-Robinson had been on the ground for several seconds and was noticeably injured.

“I asked the ref what I could have done better and he was like,’’ Browning said before pausing. “I think to them it looked like I hit him in the head and neck area, but I obviously didn’t so I’m not mad at them They’re just trying to do their jobs and protect the quarterback.”

Lutz player of month

The Broncos had a perfect record during November and Wil Lutz had a nearly perfect kicking month.

With that in mind, the Denver kicker was named AFC special teams player of the month.

With the Broncos going 3-0 in the month, Lutz made all 11 of his field-goal attempts and was 3 of 4 on extra-point attempts. He was 4 of 4 on field goals from 40 yards and beyond, including a 42-yarder.

“It’s great,” Lutz said of the award. “Hard work pays off. The three of us (Lutz, long snapper Mitch Fraboni and punter/holder Riley Dixon) have been working hard to help this team and I’m glad we’ve been able to do that.”

At Buffalo on Nov. 13, Lutz had his only extra point miss in November, in the second quarter. And with Denver trailing 22-21 he missed a 41-yard field goal in the waning seconds before the Bills were called for having 12 men on the field. Given another chance, Lutz made a 36-yard attempt on the final play and the Broncos won 24-22.

“I got to give some credit to the 12th man in Buffalo for one of those,” Dixon said.

Lutz finished that game 4 of 4 on field-goal attempts. He then went 5 of 5 in a 21-20 win over Minnesota on Nov. 19 and 2 of 2 in a 29-12 win Sunday over Cleveland.

Lutz was limited in practice Wednesday and Thursday due to a hip injury. Special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica said Lutz was a “little bit sore” Thursday but expects him to play Sunday at Houston.

“I didn’t see anything today that led me to be concerned that he would miss the football game,’’ Kotwica said.

Jeudy back at practice

With temperatures in the 40s and the upcoming Houston game being played indoors, the Broncos moved Thursday’s game indoors.

Wide receiver Jerry Jeudy returned to practice on a limited basis after sitting out Wednesday’s workout due to a groin injury. Also limited were wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. (hamstring) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (back). Mathis was not on Wednesday’s injury report.

With the practice on artificial turf, the Broncos rested two players, defensive tackle Mike Purcell and tight end Chris Manhertz. Both practiced outside Wednesday on grass and neither has had an injury designation this week.

Prime time in Detroit

The Broncos’ winning streak has caught the attention of network executives.

With Denver having a five-game streak, the NFL announced that its Week 15 game at Detroit has been set for prime time on NFL Network, and will kick off at 6:15 p.m. MST on Saturday, Dec. 16.

When the NFL schedule came out in May, it was announced that the game at Ford Field was one of five games designated that could be played on Dec. 16 rather than Sunday, Dec. 17.

Of those five, the NFL announced that three would be on Dec. 16 and televised by NFL Network. Denver’s game also will be televised locally by KMGH-TV, channel 7.

The other two games on Dec. 16 will be Minnesota at Cincinnati at 11 a.m. MST and Pittsburgh at Indianapolis at 2:30 p.m. MST. The two games that were possibilities to be played on Dec. 16 that now will be on Dec. 17 are Atlanta at Carolina and Chicago at Cleveland.

The NFL also announced that the Philadelphia at Seattle game originally scheduled for Dec. 17 has been flexed to Monday Night Football the next day and will replace the previously scheduled Kansas City at New England game. That game was moved to Dec. 17.
