For longtimers in the area, talk of a strong El Niño and its possible effects on the weather may have stirred memories of the epic blizzard of October 1997 - also a strong El Niño year. 

Claire Swinford can speak the language of the artist because she is one — a valuable skill in her role as director of urban engagement for the Colorado Springs Downtown Partnership. The arts aren't the only thing her job encompasses; walking tours, signage, accessibility and more fall under that broad "urban engagement" umbrella. But an understanding of, and appreciation for, the role of the arts is critical to the job.

The Colorado Springs Chamber & EDC touts the Springs' manufacturing presence as "diverse and vibrant." And, indeed, the Chamber & EDC lists more than 400 manufacturers in the Pikes Peak region, serving a wealth of industries, from aerospace to medical devices to data storage.
