The Pikes Peak region has long been home to military installations, and El Paso County is unique for being the only county in the nation that is home to five military commands: Fort Carson, United States Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base and Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.

As signified by five red stripes on the Switchbacks logo representing the five military bases in the Pikes Peak region, as well as the blood that has been shed in defense of our country, the Switchbacks organization is proud of the community’s strong ties to the military and extends continued support to our local active duty and retired veterans.

Local Switchbacks’ signee, Kevin Durr, is a class of 2013 Air Force Academy graduate and active duty 1st Lieutenant. The final player signed before the Switchbacks’ inaugural 2015 season began, Durr was the 16th overall pick selected in the 2013 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Seattle Sounders. Unfortunately, due to his commitment to our country through the United States Air Force, he was unable to get a contract. However, finding a home in Colorado Springs with the Switchbacks allowed him to fulfil his Air Force commitment while also succeeding as a professional soccer player.

And, just in time for the 2016 season, the Switchbacks unveiled a Military Support Sponsorship program created specifically to support local military members and their families, by inviting them to games to thank them for their service. Along with complimentary tickets and additional hospitality to Military families who sign up, a private Military section has been set aside at Switchbacks Stadium.

In celebration of our military, in partnership with match sponsor The Southern Colorado BBB, Military Appreciation Night offers a tribute to honor those who have served, or are still serving in all branches of the United States Armed Forces. The match on Sunday, at 1:30 p.m. on August 21st, as the Switchbacks take on the Rio Grande Valley will feature a Stryker and a Humvee from Ft. Carson as well as The Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard and Combat Musician Danny Byram performing the national anthem.

Come out and help the Switchback’s support the veterans and military personnel in our community.   For more information, visit
