Teller County Extension

800 Research Drive, Suite 224, Woodland Park, 686-7961,

Living the rural Rocky Mountain lifestyle can be challenging and I’ve leaned on the Teller County Extension office of Colorado State University as a resource for just about everything. They provide assistance and programs for citizens in five main areas: agriculture, horticulture, family and consumer science, natural resources and 4-H Youth programs. Opportunities through 4-H programs are numerous and include nearly every hobby imaginable: sewing, shooting sports, woodworking, metalworking, music, crafting, canning and more. These programs come to fruition at the Teller County Fair, July 27-Aug. 4, at the fairgrounds in Cripple Creek. This year’s fair features an ATV and Cowboy rodeo, demolition derby, dances on Friday and Saturday evenings, pageants, 4‑H shows and a steak dinner and livestock auction on Saturday.

The Big Aspen Happnin’ Fall Festival

Historic Bennett Avenue, Cripple Creek,

Coloradans have an appreciation for aspen trees, but nothing compares to the autumn season when aspens change into a glorious cavalcade of gold, yellow, red and orange against the backdrop of clear blue skies. The Big Aspen Happnin’ festival boasts live entertainment, a pumpkin patch, street vendors, beer garden and more. Activities and entertainment are free! Step into 19th century historic ambiance Sept. 28-29 on historic Bennett Avenue in Cripple Creek at the height of the fall season. This event is a favorite that celebrates these beautiful trees.

Rocky Mountain Motorsports

2651 W. U.S. 24, Florissant, 686-6977,

The opportunity to explore, roam and revisit the highways, byways and trails of the Pikes Peak region is never lost or taken for granted by my family and I appreciate these roads forged by the Ute Tribe, mountain men, ranchers and miners. The Gold Belt Scenic Byway encompasses the historic roads of Teller County, including Phantom Canyon, Shelf Road, High Park Road and Teller County Road One, all linking to Cripple Creek and bringing passengers and supplies to and from the gold mining district. Rocky Mountain Motorsports, located in Florissant at the crossroads of Teller 1 and U.S. 24, is a great outlet supporting motorcycle and off-road enthusiasts for sales, service, parts, accessories along with clothing and riding gear for ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes and motorcycles — including Harley Davidson. Owner Steve Bond comes highly recommended for any mechanical work or maintenance needs on your vehicle or sporting equipment.

Front Range Minerals

631 W. Midland Ave., Woodland Park, 354-8612,

Traipsing off into National Forest in search of gems and minerals is my way to exercise and rejuvenate. Teller County’s Pikes Peak and Crystal Peak are almost legendary for the abundance of gems and minerals including topaz, smoky quartz, amazonite and gold. Oftentimes, after finding such a beauty, I wonder, “What exactly did I find?” or “What can I do with this piece of treasure?” Front Range Minerals entrepreneurs Isaiah Nickerson and Michael Pierce have established an outlet for rock hounds and jewelry aficionados alike. They feature a wide selection of jewelry and faceted gemstones from various places around the world, including Colorado. Both are self-taught and, according to Isaiah, “always learning.” The store also offers coffees and hot chocolate to sip on while perusing the displays.
