Two emaciated horses were rescued from an El Paso County property Wednesday after investigators determined they were criminally neglected, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The horses’ owner, Dorice Justice, was charged with two misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies said they tried contacting Justice multiple times before Wednesday. They ultimately obtained a search warrant and swept the property with a veterinarian.
