Two hikers from Colorado Springs were found safe Sunday after a chilly night on La Plata Peak in Chaffee County.

Chaffee County Sheriff John Spezze said a search for Israel Valdovinos and Danial Schreither began Saturday night after family members reported them overdue.

Chaffee County Search and Rescue North located the hikers' camp about 10,500 feet on La Plata Peak early Sunday morning, but the two missing hikers were not there, Spezze wrote in an email.

The two were spotted by helicopter Sunday afternoon and were contacted by ground search crews. They told searchers they were caught in foul weather, including high winds and snow, Saturday.

"Valdovinos and Schreither then dropped below the summit and took shelter in sparse trees, where they were forced to spend the night," Spezze wrote. "On Sunday morning, the pair were then attempting to walk out of the area when they were contacted by search and rescue crews."

Rescuers said the two were "extremely fatigued" but uninjured.
