STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The family of a man awaiting sentencing in a fatal traffic collision in Steamboat Springs says he has died of cancer.

Steamboat Today reports ( ) Scott Penfold died Tuesday. His family submitted a death notice to the judge.

Penfold was convicted last month of careless driving resulting in death. He faced a sentence of 10 days to one year in jail.

Authorities said Penfold's SUV drifted into oncoming traffic on July 2, 2013, and struck a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, 60-year-old Fels Bernhard of Germany, was killed.

Penfold's lawyer had argued he might have blacked out.

Penfold's lawyer told the judge last month he was considering asking for a new trial after Penfold learned he was tentatively diagnosed with a liver disease whose symptoms included lightheadedness and heart palpitations.
