A 53-year-old Colorado Springs man was dragged 45 feet to his death while attempting to stop his pickup from rolling away near North Powers Boulevard and Old Ranch Road, the Colorado State Patrol said Thursday.

Sometime between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Dodd Johnson got out of his 2002 Ford F-350 at the beginning of a private driveway on Arrowhead Drive, the patrol said. Johnson was opening a metal gate leading to the property when his truck began to roll forward. He tried to re-enter the pickup through the driver's door and was dragged, the patrol said.

The left side of the truck hit a tree and Johnson was pinned between the door and the frame of the truck.

It's unknown if drug or alcohol use was a factor in the crash, the patrol said. Mechanical failure is not being considered a factor.
