Two people are dead, including a Commerce City police officer, after a multi-car accident Friday night in Adams County.

Authorities said the crash happened near Colorado Highway 2 and Turnberry Parkway in Commerce City.

Colorado State Patrol responded to crash because the police officer was involved.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. a Ford F350 that was traveling south on Highway 2 drove off the side of the road onto the shoulder, CSP said. The pickup then came back and collided head-on with the Commerce City officer's undercover Ford Explorer.

The police vehicle was propelled towards a Kia Soul that was driving north and collided into the driver's side of that vehicle, the state patrol reported.

Both the officer and the driver of the Kia were killed, according to the release.

The driver of the Ford truck sustained life-threatening injuries and was  transported to the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora.

The identities of the deceased are not being released at this time.

The investigation is ongoing.
