Holmes 8th-grader competes in state geographic bee

Elinor Kuykendall, a Holmes Middle School eighth-grader in Colorado Springs School District 11, will be competing in the Colorado Geographic Bee on Friday in Denver with students from across the state.Elinor qualified at the classroom level, won the school-wide competition andpassed a written qualifying test for the state level.Each year, about 50 to 65 students qualify at the classroom level, and then advance to the school level, said Michael Wilshusen, who has organized the Holmes bee for the past eight years.Elinor is no stronger to the competition, since she has made it to the final as a sixth- and seventh-grader.The winner of the state bee will compete at the National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C., May 24-25.
