Rampart scored early and often but couldn't stop ThunderRidge in a Saturday shootout at Liberty High School. The Grizzlies led by only eight points in the third quarter but pulled away for a 56-27 victory."You saw two pretty good football teams," said Rampart coach Dan Olson. "We're a good football team. Teams know that after they play us."Rampart trailed 35-14 early in the second quarter but got within 35-27 when Devin Mohn raced 59 yards on the second play of the second half."Our kids fought back," Olson said. "You take away those two turnovers in the first half and it makes a big difference."Mohn - a senior speedster at 5-foot-11, 185 pounds - didn't play in the fourth quarter due to a probable concussion but gained 221 yards on 18 carries. He had touchdown runs of 55, 44 and 59 yards.ThunderRidge senior tailback Chris Nwoke (6-foot, 205), who has an offer from Wyoming, countered with 199 yards on 25 carries. He had TD runs of 28, six and three yards."Chris has unbelievable vision and quickness and the ability to change direction," said Grizzlies coach Joe Johnson, who won state titles in 2001, '04 and '05. "He doesn't have the speed of Mohn but he's more powerful. Their defense would have us stopped and he'd just make a play."ThunderRidge (3-0) won its first two games by a total of 11 points, beating Southern Conference foes Douglas County (41-35) and Mountain Vista (19-14).Rampart (0-3, 0-3) moved up to 5A this season."We'll come back and shock some people," Olson said. "Our kids played with a lot of heart tonight. We had two kids hurt and they wanted to go back in. The difference against 5A teams is in depth. You could see that in the fourth quarter."Mohn gave Rampart its only lead when he dashed 55 yards for a touchdown with 8:11 left in the first quarter. Then, it really got wild as ThunderRidge scored three TDs in the next 2:09, the second on Patrick Pokryfke's 21-yard interception return.Mohn added a 44-yard scoring run before the Grizzlies capped the opening quarter with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Tim Jenkins to Jared Faulkner to go ahead 27-14.
