Fountain-Fort Carson student removed from class after bringing gun to school

A student at Fountain-Fort Carson High School was removed from a classroom Tuesday morning after bringing a handgun to the school, authorities confirmed.

School administrators received a tip about a student with a weapon and removed the gun and the student with assistance from school resource officers, according to a Fountain-Fort Carson School District 8 press release.

Officers found a 9mm gun inside the student's backpack, Fountain police chief Chris Heberer told The Gazette.

The gun was removed from the classroom without incident, said Heberer, who received the report about 11 a.m.

"Safety and security response protocols were followed closely by school staff and officers to keep our students safe," the school district said in a statement. "All students are safe and school is proceeding as normal."

Authorities did not identify the student. Further details about the incident were not released.
