El Paso County’s suicide rate, which was 25 per 100,000 people in 2015, according to Pikes Peak Suicide Prevention Partnership, will be examined in a Newsweek article in Friday’s edition of the national magazine.

The piece looks at how the trend is impacting the region and how the community is working together on prevention and assistance afterward.

Newsweek contacted several school districts, government agencies, military installations, businesses and families impacted by suicide.

Academy School District 20 was among those asked to provide information. The district’s sole charter school, The Classical Academy, which had one of the most recent teen suicides, in which a student was found hanging before school from the goal posts on the athletic field, will host a parenting seminar next week, “Parenting in Challenging Times.”

It will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 26 in the TCA North Gym.

A nationally recognized psychologist will address important topics, including youth suicide, self-injury, depression, social media and bullying.

The local Suicide Prevention Crisis Line is 1-888-885-1222. Students and parents in need of assistance also can call Safe 2 Tell Colorado 1-877-542-7233.
