The annual used instrument drive, Bringing Music to Life, kicked off this week and runs through March 17.

The nonprofit event collects used band or orchestra instruments that are no longer needed. The donated instruments are refurbished by the Colorado Institute of Musical Instrument Technology and given to needy high school band programs.

The drop-off location in Colorado Springs is Meeker Music, 624 N. Tejon St.The store’s hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Last year’s event provided 630 instruments to 53 Colorado schools.

Since the drives began, more than 3,800 instruments worth more than $1.75 million have been awarded to elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state.

Monetary donations also are accepted, with funds going to repair instruments.

Title One schools that have a majority of students receiving free or reduced cost lunches are encouraged to apply for instruments now through March 31 using the online application form. Bringing Music to Life will match qualifying schools with donated instruments.
