Nearly 8 weeks later, question remains: What happened to 'The Mad Pooper'?

A female jogger reportedly caught on camera defecating in a Colorado Springs family's yard made a worldwide splash and then all but vanished.

A female jogger reportedly caught on camera defecating in a Colorado Springs family's yard made a worldwide splash and then all but vanished.

The Budde family, which first reported the jogger and dubbed her "The Mad Pooper," said in September that the woman had been running through their neighborhood near Briargate Parkway and Union Boulevard for nearly two months, leaving behind a pile of feces at least once a week.

Finally fed up, they reported the acts to Colorado Springs police, who opened a criminal investigation and sought help identifying the jogger. Even toilet paper giant Charmin jumped into the smelly fray, offering a year's supply of toilet paper to the jogger if she turned herself in.

Then, nothing.

No one stepped forward, no suspects were named and police spokesman Lt. Howard Black confirmed Monday that no arrests have been made. He declined to elaborate except to say the investigation is still active and there have been "no additional reports of pooping."

The Budde family also isn't talking.

Neither Cathy nor her husband Chris has returned The Gazette's calls, and attempts to reach the family in person at home also were unsuccessful. Black declined to say whether the family was still cooperating with police.

The Buddes initially were open about their plight. Cathy shared their story on camera with Gazette news partner KKTV. She recalled her children first spotting the woman, yelling "There's a lady taking a poop!"

Cathy told KKTV she tried to confront the jogger, thinking the embarrassment would put an end to the episodes, but the woman seemed unashamed.

"I'm like, 'are you serious?'" Cathy said. "'Are you really taking a poop right here in front of my kids!?' She's like, 'Yeah, sorry!'"

Following the media frenzy, a video surfaced on YouTube of a man purporting to represent "The Mad Pooper." He called her "Shirley" and said she had suffered a traumatic brain injury after gender-reassignment surgery.

Several media outlets ran with the report before the creator posted a second video admitting he'd made it all up in the name of "comedy and satire." As of Monday, both videos had disappeared from the site.

Last month, The Gazette canvassed the Buddes' neighborhood again, but none of the residents who answered their doors reported any other pooping incidents. Mothers watching their children at the playground on Briargate Parkway also hadn't heard of any new reports of malodorous mischief.

Instead, the moms asked the same question that seems to be stumping so many others: What happened to "The Mad Pooper"?
