Police arrested a Colorado Springs man after allegedly shooting and killing his fiancé's ex-boyfriend during a custody exchange in unincorporated Elbert County.Â
Elbert County Sheriff's Office deputies were dispatched to a Valero gas station at 525 County Road 166, just outside of Parker, around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. A woman had reported that two men were fighting and one pulled out a gun, shooting the other, according to arrest records.
Upon arrival, deputies found 36-year-old Michael Bolan lying in a small alleyway next to the gas station with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later announced deceased.
The suspect, 26-year-old Jeffrey Church, was nearby. Authorities said he allegedly placed his handgun in the driver's side door of his vehicle. Deputies arrested him. He was cooperative, according to records.Â
Witnesses told investigators that the two men had gotten into a fist fight outside of the station. Church had "the upper hand in the fight" and pulled his gun out of his pocket and shot Bolan as he was either on the ground or falling to the ground, authorities said.Â
Church matched witness descriptions of the suspect, authorities added. Â
According to the sheriff's office, Bolan was the ex-boyfriend of Church's fiancé. They were meeting at for a custody exchange.Â
The suspect was arrested on first-degree murder charges, the sheriff's office said. His next court appearance is Feb. 20.
