The Department of Veterans Affairs has released a new online tool that will allow veterans to upgrade or change their military discharge.

The web-based service consists of a series of questions designed to point the veteran in the right direction.

“By answering a few short questions, Veterans will receive information on the specific armed services board to contact, the form/s to fill out, special guidance applicable to their case, where to send their application and helpful tips for appealing their discharge,” Veterans Affairs said in a press release.

This tool was developed in partnership with the Defense Department with the specific goal of helping veterans discharged unjustly.

“These are Veterans who were discharged due to incidents relating to post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury or sexual orientation,” said Veterans Affairs. They estimate that tens of thousands of veterans may have been affected.

The Colorado Springs Gazette covered the issue extensively in its Pulitzer Prize winning report entitled “Other than Honorable.”
