Pueblo police shot 22-year-old Jonathan Martinez Monday night after he attempted to run over an officer in front of a Kohl's, the Pueblo Police Department said Friday.
Both Cpl. John Guerrero and Officer Carl Pagels responded to the Kohl's, located at 5627 N. Elizabeth St., at about 7:30 p.m. for an in-progress shoplifter or trespasser, police said.
The officers arrived and attempted to block in a stolen vehicle related to the incident when Martinez, who was driving the car, ran into Guerrero, police said.
The officers shot at Martinez, hitting him while he was in the vehicle, police said. It is unclear which officer hit Martinez.
Guerrero treated Martinez's injuries on scene before he was taken to a local hospital, police said. Later that evening, Martinez was flown to a Denver hospital, where he was last known to be in intensive care.
Police said Martinez was wanted on three felony warrants at the time of the incident: vehicle theft and two counts of identity theft.
Guerrero and Pagels have been Pueblo police officers for 18 and 13 years, respectively. Both were placed on paid administrative leave.
The shooting has been turned over to the 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team for investigation.
