A 29-year-old Colorado Springs man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of child abuse and vehicular assault, both felonies, after an unrestrained 6-year-old girl in his vehicle was critically injured in a crash, police said.

Daniel Muniz was driving east on Galley Road when he reportedly ran a red light at Wooten Road and collided with a small construction trailer being pulled by a vehicle turning left onto westbound Galley Road, police said. The crash happened about 8:20 a.m. May 4.

Muniz was "knowingly operating a vehicle with a faulty braking system," and the girl was unrestrained in the front of the vehicle, police said. He and the girl were taken to a hospital, and at the time, police said she was in critical condition. She remained hospitalized Thursday.
