The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist in the investigation of a deputy-involved fatal shooting that happened Sunday in Cañon City, the agency said in a news release Wednesday.
Edward Tracy Abeyta, 52, was pulled over on Skyline Drive just after 2 a.m. Sunday after Cañon City police responded to a "suspicious vehicle," CBI reported. After Fremont County Sheriff's deputies arrived, Abeyta nearly struck an officer with his vehicle, the CBI reported.
Abeyta drove away and deputies and officers followed. The pursuit ended at Temple Canyon Road in Fremont County, CBI reported.
"As Abeyta was ordered out of his truck, he pointed a handgun at deputies," CBI said in the news release.
A deputy fired a shot but did not hit Abeyta, who then turned his gun on himself, CBI reported.
The deputy, whose name has not been released, was placed on paid administrative leave.
