A small community east of Woodland Park once known as Trout Park, Crystola was settled in the 1860s and subsequently developed by an interesting collection of cattle ranchers and spiritualists. A roadhouse was established in 1873 to serve the stream of travelers passing to and from the mines in Leadville, Aspen, and Cripple Creek. An Illinois Congressman built a home and ranch here in 1876, and began holding séances in his home with visiting spiritual mediums. The Crystola Town Company built a railroad station, grocery store, and post office to accommodate the growing number of spiritualists in residence. Although the spiritual community did not prosper, the town’s beautiful surroundings continue to enchant and inspire residents and visitors alike.
