Twenty-five miles west of Colorado Springs, Divide sits at the 9,165-foot summit of Ute Pass. Besides wide-open spaces and breathtaking views, the area offers numerous recreational opportunities. The early economy focused on ranching, lumber, and freighting. The railroad reached Divide in 1887, carrying passengers and freight from Colorado City to western Colorado. After gold was struck in 1890, the town served as one of the main access points to Cripple Creek’s mines. Today, the draw is Mueller State Park — a 5,000-acre natural area with fabulous views of the western side of Pikes Peak. The park boasts 55 miles of trails perfect for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, as well as winter cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
