Paul Sutton, owner of Peak Structural Inc., was named Small Business Person of the Year during the annual Small Business Week awards Thursday. It concluded a five-day series of events that included a food truck competition, workshops and a cybersecurity demonstration.
The Palmer Lake company was started in 2002 and does foundation repair in the Colorado Springs, Denver and Pueblo areas and also does basement waterproofing services in the Colorado Springs and Pueblo areas.
Peak Structural received the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado's Excellence in Customer Service Award in 2008 and 2015. Sutton and Peak Structural also received the Family-Owned Business of the Year award.
The Small Business Person Award is based on the company's financial results, staying power, innovation, ability to respond to adversity and contributions to the community. The winner is nominated for the state award given this month by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
Other nominees for the Small Business Person of the Year award were A.J. Peak of Peak Dental Services LLC and Etienne Hardre of Locals Barbershop and Salon. Kim Hanson of LearningRx, Nora LaMar of Glassical Designs and Randy Schillinger of Honest Accurate Auto Service also were nominated for the Family-Owned Business of the Year award.
Other awards given during Small Business Week dinner included:
- Young Entrepreneur of the Year. Lisa Blattner of Blattner Law Firm. Other nominees: Taylor Rodriguez of Peak Social Insights and Joseph Cheung of Toggle Industries LLC.
- Veteran Small Business Owner of the Year. Gus Hernandez of Dynamic Aerospace Technologies. Other nominees: Nandhip Kumar and Prafulla Nandhip of Veteran's Convenience Store and Rodney Gullatte of Firma IT Solutions.
- Small Business Champion of the Year. Sara Kinney of Rim Technologies LLC. Other nominees: Sharon Wolff of Hunter Wolff Gallery and Reggie Selby of the Air Force 21st Contracting Squadron, 21st Space Wing.
- Small Business Development Center Consultant of the Year. Cory Arcarese of CArc Media and Value Care Health Clinic.
The awards were presented by the Better Business Bureau of Southern Colorado and the Pikes Peak Small Business Development Center.
