Burlington, the discount retailer formerly known as Burlington Coat Factory, is coming to the busy Powers Boulevard retail corridor in northeast Colorado Springs.

The New Jersey-based chain will lease 38,000 square feet at Powers Pointe, southwest of Powers and Barnes Road, said Max Gansline, a senior leasing representative with The Staenberg Group of St. Louis, which developed Powers Pointe.

The Burlington store will be constructed next to Tuesday Morning, on the south end of one of the center's retail buildings, Gansline said. Construction is expected to start in about 30 days, and an opening probably will take place in late 2018 or early 2019, he said.

Burlington has stores at the Chapel Hills and Citadel malls in Colorado Springs. Whether changes are planned in the operation of those stores isn't known; Gansline said he had no information on the fate of Burlington's mall locations and company representatives couldn't be reached for comment.

Burlington has more than 600 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico, according to its website. It describes itself as a "national off-price retailer offering style for less" with up to 65 percent off other stores' prices. Its stores sell men's, women's and children's clothing, as well as shoes, furniture, baby accessories, home décor items and gifts.

Over the last 15 to 20 years, Powers Boulevard - primarily between Platte Avenue and Woodmen Road - arguably has become the Springs' hottest shopping corridor.

Big-box stores, groceries and restaurants have flocked to the area, which is teeming with thousands of homes and apartments. Walmart, J.C. Penney, Target, Safeway, King Soopers, Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster and local favorites Jose Muldoons and Panino's are among the familiar names with a presence along or just off Powers.

"They were drawn to our center, to Powers Pointe, primarily because of the highly visible Powers Boulevard location and the fact that they had not yet staked a flag along Powers," Gansline said. "That's really a big part of the impetus for them joining the center and we're really pleased to include them."

Powers Pointe is one of the corridor's newer retail projects, which The Staenberg Group developed with an eye toward attracting stores and restaurants that would be mostly new to the Colorado Springs market.

Sprouts Farmer's Market, LongHorn Steakhouse, Blaze Pizza, Tokyo Joe's, Zoes Kitchen and Bentley's Pet Stuff also are part of the center. Villa Salon & Spa, a high-end women's salon with locations in Texas, will open at Powers Pointe in 90 days, Gansline said.

"(Burlington) adds a component of a soft-goods retailer that we have not had at the center before," Gansline said. "The inclusion of an apparel-based retailer that also sells some home goods and baby and child products adds a different offering for our customers."
