Hollywood’s ‘most famous gator’ now resides in a remote Colorado valley

Those in the Centennial State have the chance to see one of the most famous alligators of the Hollywood scene in a remote part of the San Luis Valley.

Going by the name of Morris and best known for his appearance in the 1996 film ‘Happy Gilmore,’ in which he eats the hand of a character called Chubbs, this American Alligator celeb resides at the Colorado Gators Reptile Park, which is located about 16 miles north of Alamosa. According to a recent article from RoadTrippers, Morris was in the movie industry for 30 years prior to moving to the reptile rescue and can still be a bit camera shy. Morris has call the rescue facility home since 2006.

Morris, who also played a role in Doctor Doolittle II and Interview with a Vampire, is one of the largest gators at the park, measuring in at more than 10 feet long and weighing about 500 pounds, according to a Colorado Life Magazine piece.

Unfortunately, only estimations exist regarding Morris’ age, with an article that first appeared in 2016 pinning him at about 55 years old at that time – which would make him about 63 years old today. While an alligator in the wild tends to live about 35 to 50 years on average, the life expectancy of the species is much longer if under human care – about 60 to 80 years.

Either way, Morris is getting older, and those who want to visit him should plan a trip to Colorado Gators Reptile Park sooner than later. The park rescues various reptiles – focusing on alligators – and works to educate the public on the animal species they house. The alligators are able to thrive in the frigid Colorado climate year-round thanks to geothermal pools in the area that are naturally warmed to a comfortable temperature.
