Zio's Italian Kitchen has closed in northwest Colorado Springs, about five months after the regional restaurant chain's Texas-based ownership sought Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
It's not certain when Zio's shut its doors. But a Colorado Springs Utilities notice stuck inside the restaurant's front door at 6650 Corporate Drive, and recent online reviews and comments, indicate the closure occurred in late January. The restaurant was the lone Zio's location in Colorado.
Representatives of owner Zio's Restaurant Co. in suburban San Antonio couldn't be reached for comment Friday.
A September 2016 bankruptcy filing said that Zio's Restaurant Co. was operating 15 restaurants primarily in the southwest, but planned to close five and evaluate others for possible closure, according to stories in the Wall Street Journal and San Antonio Express-News.
The stories said Zio's had suffered as restaurant-goers cut back on eating out. The chain's revenues also had been hard hit because some restaurants were located in areas where lower oil prices had hurt local economies, the news stories said.
Zio's website showed the chain continues to operate nine locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas.
Zio's has been open in Colorado Springs since at least 2003; its 7,300-square-foot building was constructed in 1998, El Paso County land records show.
