Young professionals group breaking off from Colorado Springs Regional Business Alliance

An organization that caters to young professionals is breaking away from the Colorado Springs Regional Business Alliance to form its own nonprofit.

The Business Alliance Rising Professionals group, which has about 275 members, will become its own organization by the first part of next year.

Group members and Business Alliance officials believe the creation of a separate organization will allow the young professionals to better learn how to operate a nonprofit, achieve fundraising goals and express their own views on community matters, said RBA President Joe Raso. These are things the group cannot do while associated with the RBA, Raso said.

"As their own nonprofit, they will be allowed to go after some resources they can't under us," he said. "The Business Alliance takes positions on policy issues, and they want to do that on their own. Under our organization, they cannot do that."

The Rising Professionals was established around 2006 under what was then the Chamber of Commerce. In 2011, the chamber merged with the city's Economic Development Corp. to form the Regional Business Alliance.

The umbrella organization has been helping the Rising Professionals through staff support, finance and marketing, Raso said. He said that by forming its own nonprofit, the group will learn how to establish an administration, handle finances and coordinate meetings and events.

"That is a great learning opportunity for our young leaders," Raso said. "You are not going to know unless you go through it."

Despite its name, there is no age limit for joining the Rising Professionals, Raso said.

No one from Rising Professionals could be reached for comment.
