A woman sustained serious injuries when a deer that was hit by a car slammed into her, just as she was checking on a fawn that she had struck with her own vehicle.
Lanes in both directions of U.S. 24 across from the Walmart store in Woodland Park were closed for more than an hour as police worked to clear the wreck, which happened shortly after 7 a.m.
Police said the woman got out of her vehicle to check on a fawn she had struck while driving eastbound on U.S. 24, and a second driver stopped to help. As they were standing on the median, a third vehicle struck an adult deer crossing the westbound lanes. The impact propelled the deer across the highway, hitting the woman as she stood in the median.
Police said she was taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
