Colorado State Patrol troopers say alcohol may have contributed to an early morning fatal crash on Interstate 25 near Monument Sunday.

Troopers say a driver lost control of her southbound Mazda just before 1:30 a.m. near the Baptist Road exit, just north of the Air Force Academy.

The Mazda spun across the interstate before hitting the median and rolling.

The Mazda’s passenger, identified as 26-year-old Katherine Banzhaf, suffered fatal injuries, troopers said.

The Mazda’s driver, 27-year-old Ashley Brooks, was taken to a hospital with what troopers called serious injuries.

Both wore seat belts.

Troopers spent hours Sunday probing the crash. At 8 a.m., the State Patrol issued a news release saying alcohol was considered to be a contributing factor in the wreck, which remained under investigation.
