A Colorado Springs woman died in a one-car crash on Interstate 25 on Tuesday, and a 3-year-old in the car was injured and taken to a local hospital, the Colorado State Patrol reported.
Shara Cardenas, 28, was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Malibu south on the interstate in the left lane when it drifted onto the left shoulder and collided with the metal guardrail.
She steered abruptly right, and the vehicle rotated, traveling across both southbound lanes and off the right side of I-25, crashing into the hillside and rolling, the State Patrol said.
It's likely that she wasn't paying attention to the road, said Sgt. Scott Hophan, because instead of turning where the road curves slightly to the right, she continued driving straight and smashed into the guardrail. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.
Cardenas, who was not wearing her seatbelt, was ejected and pronounced dead.
The toddler's injuries were initially thought to be severe, but were later determined to be minor.
The crash was at 4 p.m. south of South Academy Boulevard.
