Flames from destructive southern California wildfires continued to churn toward coastal and mountain communities northwest of Los Angeles on Thursday, disrupting travel on a major highway and triggering more evacuations.
As of Thursday afternoon, the three big fires  -- the Thomas, Rye and Creek fires -- added up to more than 115,600 acres. That's almost as big as Colorado Springs'  124,736 acres and just shy of outsizing the 2002 Hayman fire, which grew to 137,760 acres. The last two big Colorado Springs fires, 2012 Waldo Canyon fire and 2013 Black Forest fire, burned a total of 32,527 acres.
Above are the three Southern California fires, as of Thursday afternoon, compared with the city of Colorado Springs.
