BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Wegmans Food Markets is donating more than $1 million to a Buffalo-area children's museum that plans to open a new facility on the city's Lake Erie waterfront in two years.

The Rochester-based supermarket chain says it has donated $550,000 to the Explore & More Children's Museum and The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation has donated another $500,000.

The 20-year-old museum located in East Aurora features hands-on and interactive exhibits designed for children ages 1 to 10. The organization plans to open a 40,000-square-foot museum with a rooftop garden at Buffalo's Canalside in 2016.

Wegmans has 83 supermarkets in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, Massachusetts and New York. Of the company's 46 New York stores, 11 are in the Buffalo area.
