Wednesday’s United Soccer League results benefited the Colorado Springs Switchbacks with Los Angeles downing third-place Rio Grande Valley 1-0 and the Real Monarchs SLC defeating San Antonio 2-0.
Salt Lake City moved up into ninth with two games remaining, pushing San Antonio into a tie for 10th with Seattle; the Switchbacks home foe this Saturday night. LA’s win moved it up to fourth.
That means two of the four teams with a game in hand (Oklahoma City, Swope Park remain) on second-place Colorado Springs (13-8-7, 46 points) were unable to make up ground or in the case of RGV (12-7-9, 45 points), overtake them in the Western Conference standings before this weekend.
The results give the Switchbacks a little boost in their bid for a top-two finish with a chance at the Western Conference crown, pending Saturday’s result. While a playoff berth is assured, Colorado Springs could drop as low as sixth if the Switchbacks lose their final two regular-season games.
"I know I have said this a lot, but we really can only worry about ourselves and how we're playing," Colorado Springs coach Steve Trittschuh said earlier this week. "We have to be ready to play this Saturday."
