The Colorado Springs Sky Sox turned their first triple play at home in nearly 30 years, but ironically enough it was a series of defensive miscues that doomed them in this game.
Three passed balls and three errors helped New Orleans plate three unearned runs in a 7-2 win over Colorado Springs on Tuesday at Security Service Field.
The defensive highlight came in the fourth inning when New Orleans had runners on first and third. Third baseman Gabriel Noriega fielded a ground ball and flipped to Ivan De Jesus Jr. to record the force out at second.
De Jesus then threw home and caught the runner trying to score. Catcher Rene Garcia then threw to first baseman Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who tagged out batter Steve Lombardozzi.
It was the fourth triple play in team history, the last coming in Sacramento in 2014. The last one at home - on June 23, 1988 - came with the first baseman recording the final out being Terry Francona, a longtime major league manager.
