COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Job descriptions for new leaders at Ohio State, Penn State and elsewhere reflect the challenges of running a major university today.
University presidents must oversee multibillion-dollar operations that employ thousands, educate tens of thousands and include satellite campuses spread across the state.
Presidents must also manage giant medical complexes, international research centers and sports programs beloved by alumni and these days never far from controversy.
The modern college president also devotes huge chunks of time to fundraising and, especially at public institutions, must be ready to tackle state politics.
The executive secretary for Penn State's search committee says it's common to joke that universities are looking for "God on a good day."
