Look for Heart Health features on gazette.com/heart throughout American Heart Month, sponsored by Penrose-St. Francis Health Services.

When it comes to healthcare partnerships, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has forged some of the best in town. Case in point: its working relationship with the Vascular Center of Colorado (VCC).

“VCC is what’s known as a joint venture: fifty percent is owned by Penrose-St. Francis and fifty percent is owned by a group of local physicians,” said VCC Director Adele Serio, MSN, RN, RCIS. “We have a board of directors with representatives from both the hospitals and the owning physicians.” Penrose-St. Francis is part of the Centura Health Heart and Vascular Network, the region’s leading provider of cardiovascular care.

The Vascular Center supplies staff and disposable equipment while Penrose-St. Francis supplies the capital equipment. “Through the partnership we’re able to offer cutting edge cardiac care and interventional radiology and neurology services,” Serio said. “It’s a wonderful partnership, we’ve been able to earn quite a few awards over the years and grow as patient volume has grown.”

With a decade of business under its belt, VCC’s 60-member staff team – including 20 physicians – works out of both hospitals. The center operates six procedure rooms at Penrose Hospital and is planning to unveil two new procedure rooms at St. Francis Hospital in July.

“The center has helped make it possible for Colorado Springs to offer cardiac services that generally can only be found in major metro areas. This partnership means access to the latest technology and decreased costs and shorter hospital stays for the southern half of our state,” Serio said. VCC physicians also travel throughout southern Colorado to visit patients, providing care in communities like Woodland Park, Canon City, Alamosa, Salida, and Durango, to name a few.

“Our staff is largely tenured and extremely skilled in offering the best services possible,” Serio said. The VCC team also prides itself on staying ahead of the latest developments in cardiac care. “As we find technology evolving, we’re constantly researching what we can do to be competitive in the market. We make sure we’re offering the most advanced care that you’d find in large metro areas. Our patients deserve it.”
