USAC makes stop at Pikes Peak International Raceway

For the first time in eight years, U.S. Auto Club racing returns to Pikes Peak International Raceway.

On a day of rest for the Hill Climb, the Traxxas Silver Crown and Honda National Midgets take to the 1-mile paved oval track in Fountain.

The Silver Crown race Saturday is a 100-mile race, while the midget race is 25 laps. The midget series kicks off the day sometime after the opening ceremonies, which begin at 3 p.m. Qualifying starts at 1.

Jerry Coons Jr., tied for first in the Silver Crown series, is glad to see the return to Fountain.

"I love the race track," said Coons, who is tied with Levi Jones with 102 points. "Some paved tracks are one lane and one preferred lane is hard to pass. That place (PPIR) you could pick up a draft on the front straightaway and get a draft on somebody and pull down into one, beat them getting into one. The track is wide enough and has multiple grooves."

That could make for several cars riding side by side through turns.

"It always gave for some good racing," Coons said.

The 2008 Silver Crown and Midget Series champion is hoping the break between Hill Climb qualifying Friday and racing Sunday will attract a crowd to Fountain.

"Hopefully we get some of those fans already in town looking for something to do when they're not there," he said. "Hopefully we can get a lot of those people to come check us out. Race fans are race fans."
