Union from Ranch Drive north to Academy Boulevard reopens after 9-hour closure

Union Boulevard from Ranch Drive to Academy Boulevard has reopened after being close for about nine hours Friday because of a gas line break.

Only the far right northbound lane of Union will remain closed as crews from Colorado Springs Utilities work on a water main replacement project in the area.

Utilities spokesman Steve Berry said it took longer to reopen the lanes because utility crews decided to put in a new natural gas service line to a building across the street.

“That’s what was taking the most time,” he said. “But they had gas clamps off and that situation taken care of several hours ago.”

Berry said crews accidentally ruptured the gas line about noon.

“The water guys were looking for valves as part of that project and as they were moving on they veered a little bit off, and that’s when they hit the line,” he said.
