LAPORTE — A 14-year-old boy and his uncle are dead after being swept away in the swollen Poudre River in northern Colorado.

The boy slipped and fell in the river around noon Monday while fishing at a campground and picnic area in Poudre Canyon, about 12 miles west of Ted's Place. The 38-year-old uncle jumped in to try to rescue the boy but was pulled out of the river unconscious several miles downstream.

The uncle was taken to the hospital where he died. The boy's body was found Monday evening about eight miles downstream.

Both were from the Greeley area.

The river and other northern Colorado waterways are running high because of the spring runoff and recent rainfall. The National Weather Service has issued several flood warnings as a result.
