Two people were shot and killed in Elbert County. They were found at the site of a 31-acre illegal grow operation, according to the sheriff's office.

Deputies found the bodies at about 8 Thursday morning in the 30000 block of Highway 24. The home is just west of Simla. Investigators believe the illegal grow operation is a "contributing factor" to the shooting.

On Friday, the sheriff's office released the identities of the victims, along with more information about the case. They are 48-year-old Donn Zorens, who is the homeowner, and 30-year-old Luis Suarez from El Paso County.

Investigators say Suarez had a gunshot wound to his torso and was found dead outside. Zorens also had at least one gunshot wound and was found dead inside his home.

Deputies say both people engaged in a gunfight inside the house.

Deputies believe Suarez forced his way into the home during a home invasion robbery. Suarez allegedly had ties to organized drug crimes in Elbert and El Paso counties.
