Two of the three finalists for the job of superintendent of Washington’s largest school district in Seattle have a Colorado Springs connection.

The Seattle Public Schools board announced the finalists this week.

Andre Spencer has been superintendent of Harrison School District 2 since January 2013 and during his tenure has helped improve academic performance and close the racial achievement gap in the Pikes Peak region’s most socio-economically diverse school district.

He is also a U.S. Army veteran. Last year, Spencer was one of two finalists for the position of superintendent of Cincinnati Public Schools.

Jeanice Kerr Swift is the superintendent of Ann Arbor Public Schools in Michigan, a position she’s held since August 2013.

Before that, she was assistant superintendent for instruction, curriculum and student services in Colorado Springs School District 11.

She was named the 2018 Michigan Superintendent of the Year by the Michigan Association of School Administrators.

The third finalist is Denise Juneau, former superintendent of public instruction in Montana and the first Native American woman in the nation to be elected to a statewide office.

The new Seattle Public Schools superintendent will be the third leader in six years. The district has about 53,400 students.
