Two killed in Colorado Springs wreck, South Circle closed for hours

A car crash that killed two people Sunday afternoon shut down South Circle Drive at Ellingwood Drive as Colorado Springs police worked the wreck for more than five hours.

Major Accidents Unit detectives were at the scene of the crash that happened shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, prompting police to close off South Circle Drive from Monterey Road to Verde Drive until 7:30 p.m.

Initial reports indicated an SUV traveling northbound on Circle Drive lost control and T-boned a Toyota Corolla turning from Ellingwood Drive. The driver and juvenile passenger of the Corolla died at the scene, police said. The victims' identities were not released pending identification by the El Paso County coroner and next-of-kin notification.

Police said the driver of the SUV was not injured and faced several traffic violations.

Detectives were expected to conduct a lengthy investigation before more details were released, police said.
